How to develop social competences?

The development and enhancement of social skills should be one of the fundamental goals of the university system so as to enable a shift from ‘knowing how to do’ to ‘knowing how to be’.

If you are thinking about developing students’ social competences, explore our practical tips and evidence-based recommendations.

All materials on this subpage have been developed on the basis of research. We asked 131 students, 86 academic teachers, and 13 experts (psychologists, educators, scientists) from four countries — Spain, Italy, Poland, and Portugal — to present ways and methods of developing social competences among university students, as well as principles worth remembering during activities that stimulate development in this area. We spoke with them during focus groups, group discussions, or asked them to complete an online survey. The study was conducted in 2024 as part of the SPACES project. The responses were combined and presented in a way that allows the most important tips to be easily found.
